Marcus VanSickle, PhD, ABPP, MP
Owner and Forensic Consultant
Dr. VanSickle is a Licensed and Board-Certified Psychologist (Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology) with additional specializations in both Forensic and Medical (RxP) Psychology. He earned his Ph.D. at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2016 and completed an accredited internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He went on to earn a post-doctoral Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology through Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed his supervised prescriptive practice at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia. Dr. VanSickle then completed a two-year accredited fellowship in Forensic Psychology at the Center for Forensic Behavioral Sciences at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Within this training, Dr. VanSickle conducted numerous R.C.M. 706 evaluations for the US Military in addition to Risk and Recidivism and Fitness for Duty evaluations. Additionally, he traveled globally to provide expert consultation and expert testimony at US Military Courts-Martial, specializing in cases with a focus on alcohol, psychotropics, and memory. Dr. VanSickle completed rotations with the FBI Behavior Analysis Unit-1 (Threat Assessment), Other Government Agencies with emphasis on Insider Threat Detection and Assessment and Selection for High-Risk Positions, and Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center where he conducted Competency and Mental Status evaluations for the State of Maryland.
Prior to obtaining additional training in Forensic Psychology, Dr. VanSickle worked in numerous clinical positions. Notable early positions include his service as the Deputy Chief for Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and the Assistant Officer-in-Charge of the Joint Stress Mitigation and Restoration Team at Guantanamo Bay. Following successful completion of these assignments, Dr. VanSickle was tasked with developing and leading an Intensive Outpatient treatment program focusing on Trauma, Depression, and Anxiety Disorders for active-duty military service members. Due to the success of this program, he was then afforded the opportunity to establish a first-of-its-kind Embedded Mental Health department supporting the entire US Navy Surface Fleet at Pearl Harbor, HI. In addition to these assignments, Dr. VanSickle also served in operational and educational capacities including conducting Assessment and Selection for Special Assignments, Fitness for Duty Evaluations, and providing clinical supervision for Clinical Psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows.
Dr. VanSickle began his military career through service as an enlisted U.S. Marine from 2001-2011. As a Marine, Dr. VanSickle served in a variety of unique assignments and completed a deployment to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in 2005. As a Marine, he attended the University of Illinois at Chicago through the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP) for his BA in Applied Psychology. Upon completion of Marine OCS and his degree, he was accepted to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, resulting in his transfer to the US Navy.
Outside of clinical and forensic practice, Dr. VanSickle remains actively engaged in scientific research in the areas of military suicide prevention, firearm evaluations, and risk assessment. He also remains heavily involved in teaching, providing frequent guest lectures and training seminars on topics in military suicide prevention, forensic psychology, alcohol and memory, and counter-intuitive victim behavior.
